A New Type of Flare

The weather continues to be grey and miserable here which is made all the more infuriating by seeing on spaceweather.com that last night gave people in the UK one of the most spectacular nights of Noctilucent Clouds so far this year. It’s disappointing to know that I missed out but makes me all the more determined to catch a display as soon as this awful weather clears.

The ISS after STS-117

Also on sw.com I see that with all these new additions to the International Space Station, it is now becoming increasingly likely that observers on the ground may observe flares, similar to those produced by the Iridium satellites, which puts a nice new spin on observing this already distinct object in the sky.

Finally, Paul over in Northern Ireland had good weather over the weekend and managed to put together a series of exposures to closely illustrate a single pass of the ISS as seen from his house.
